Definition – the eye is a site contraindicated for sudation or fomentation, then
also if required, mild Fomentation can be given. The word ‘Kizhi-Swedanam’
means mild fomentation given by a bundle of cloth in which some medications
are filled with which we want to foment.
There are some kizhis like Tulsi-Haridra Kizhi, Yava kizhi, Jasmine flower kizhi,
Caster leaves Kizhi etc…
Method – Patient is asked to lie down on the Droni (procedure table) in the supine
position. One small piece of cotton is put on the pinna of ear on each side. Eyelids
should be gently wiped with cotton dipped in lukewarm water. Then with the
kizhi dipped in hot water, mild fomentation is done. Eyes should be wiped with
the cotton after finishing swedanam.
Indications – Seborrheac blepharitis, Tarsal Follicles, Acute Conjunctivitis, Acute
Keratitis, Uveitis, Corneal ulcer, Severe Dry eyes, Meibomian gland disorders,
Scleritis, both external and internal stye, etc…
Contraindications – Eyelid skin rashes, skin purpuras, Blisters over Eyelid skin etc.
